Politics, for many, has become a proxy for religion. The prominence of religion has diminished in the west but we haven’t really replaced it with anything substantial. And whilst we can be grateful in many ways to escape some of the old myths and doctrines, we’re missing the ‘meaning-making’ parts that appeal to some fundamental human needs. I sense that political tribalism appears to fill the void for a lot of people. Reading books, and learning skateboard tricks can do that too, to an extent, but there’s a limit to the impact of solo pursuits. If all we’ve got is ‘save yourself, make yourself great’ hyper-individualism people are always gonna seek meaning in community and tribe and politics is an obvious place to find that
