There’s a chicken and egg problem that gets in the way for many people when it comes to meditation. Those of us entrenched in materialist, ‘rationalist’ culture often have an aversion to it that we can’t really explain but make no attempt to overcome. Even in the face of growing evidence of the benefits, we respect the aversion and let it guide us away from meditation. But once we develop more mindfulness, we’re more able to recognise the aversion as just another sensation and let it go.
